Registered Dietitian vs. Nutritionist: What’s the Difference?

Registered Dietitian (RD or RDN)
A Registered Dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met specific academic and professional requirements, including:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in nutrition or a related field from an accredited program

  • Completion of a supervised practice internship (typically 1,200+ hours)

  • Passing a national exam from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)

  • Ongoing continuing education to stay current

  • Often licensed or regulated by their state

What they can do:
RDs are trained to provide medical nutrition therapy and help with specific health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, disordered eating, and more. They work in clinics, hospitals, private practice, schools, sports, and public health.

Nutritionist
The title “Nutritionist” is not regulated in most states, meaning anyone can call themselves one—regardless of education or training. However, some nutritionists do have formal education and credentials (such as CNS – Certified Nutrition Specialist), but not all are licensed or clinically trained.

What they can do:
A nutritionist may offer general wellness advice, meal planning, or coaching. In many states, they cannot legally provide medical nutrition therapy unless they are also licensed.
